Golden Crown Literary Society 2018 Award Finalists

For the past 14 years, the Golden Crown Literary Society has hosted “The Goldies”, literary awards for lesbian literature in sixteen genres and five special categories. Winners will be announced on July 7th at the awards ceremony in Las Vegas. I’m excited to see so many novels that I’ve enjoyed (as well many more piled atop my TBR shelf) over the past year appear as finalists.

For more information on how books are nominated and considered, head on over to Golden Crown’s website. Click on any title below to learn more about each nominee.

In the Queue: Audiobooks on my shelf

Having stacks of unread books strewn about my apartment has never stopped me from saying yes to another armload at the store. Same goes for audiobooks. I’ve amassed a decent digital pile, ensuring no more lonely nightsIf you asked me what I plan on listening to next, I’d have a hard time coming up with an answer because it all sounds good. Earlier this week I wandered around my neighborhood, surrounded by an international buffet of restaurant choices, and had a hard time deciding what to fill my growling stomach with… I also tend to come up with several reasons why that book or that book or that one over there is the one for me right now, when faced with a Willy Wonka world of choices. But, since I’m currently listening to a longer fantasy and reading multiple paperbacks and ebooks, I’d choose Leslie Odom, Jr.’s inspirational 3 1/2 hour memoir Failing Up.

So, while I get cozy, I’d like to know what’s languishing on your Audible bookshelf (or wherever your eAudiobooks call home). Are you also maddeningly indecisive like me?

2018 Winter Olympics: A booklist

Urban_exécutant_un_saut

Public Domain. Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Estampes et photographie, EI-13 (67)

The drama for Winter Olympics bronze-silver-and-gold glory will unfold in PyeongChang, South Korea. Every four years ice skating, skiing, curling, and snowboarding, and other ice and snow-based sports receive maximum exposure via television, radio, and internet platforms. Audiences around the world can thrill to speed skating and women’s hockey, and kids can imitate the intricate, powerful moves of ice skaters (like I did in my socks around the kitchen). Growing up, the Winter Olympics were my primary exposure to sports that I could never hope to play. For many of the countries competing, it is reflective of who can afford to train with equipment and facilities that far exceed a pair of sneakers and an open road.

I’ve gathered up a handful of books that center on the high stakes Olympic drama, as well as stories that feature winter sports, but don’t take place during the Olympics. I’ll continue to add books through the 25th. Please share any related books in the comments below! Let the games begin!

Tax Season Romance: Close to Home by Rachel Spangler

Close to Home: a Darlington romance (2017) by Rachel Spangler
Available from Bywater Books, AmazonBarnes & Noble, and other retailers. Be sure to check your local public library for availability.

It’s tax time! I bet you never thought you’d get excited to hear those words, did ya? Close to Home by Rachel Spangler takes on Kelly Rolen, a minor character from The Long Way Home, a Darlington romance. She isn’t the most likable character, but that is just how Kelly wants it. The thicker the barrier, the less likely you are to stick around and try to get to know who she is beneath the armor, especially her attraction to women. Beth, her ex-girlfriend, knows the claustrophobic veil of the closet all too well. Events conspire to make it impossible for Kelly to operate her family’s small tax firm alone. When Elliot Garza, an accounting student at the local college and irresistibly dapper, needs intern credit in order to graduate, Beth intervenes and pairs the two together. Heads butt, sparks fly, and every step forward earns two steps back. Friends and family help this pair slog through doubt, fear, passion, and career challenges. While Kelly (especially) may tax your patience and empathy, you won’t want to give up. Even the most cantankerous, prickly pear has a shot at HEA. Also, Elliot is a sexy package of smarts, confidence, and swagger. Gimme that 1040 form, already!

Fiction for Foodies

I’m thankful for a million people, places, and things, but when it comes to the holidays food is always my main squeeze. Feel awkward? Family overload? No football game? There’s always a comforting smorgasbord of delicious savory and sweet baked goods waiting on stand-by (I love you olives, rolls, and pumpkin pie!).

What butter….er…better booklist could I share than one in which food plays an integral role in the story? If you have some tasty reading recommendations, please share them in the comment section below 🙂

Perfect Pairing review

Perfect Pairing is a book you should read with plenty of great food at hand. No matter what time of day I return to this story or even if I just ate, I always find myself super hungry (even if the sandwich being made is not my jam). At least it’s delicious torture. Can I avoid the temptation of employing a good many food puns in this review? Probably not and I probably won’t try to hard to avoid serving them up, either. There is plenty of head butting, humor, and romance as Quinn Banning, an investment banker with strong local ties and an even stronger drive, tries to get successful food truck chef Hal Orion on board with starting a restaurant (complete with all expenses paid and creative control). Neither woman wants to give up what matters most to them. They both love their hometown of Buffalo, New York, and want to keep its special flavors intact, but come at it from seemingly different angles. Quinn’s college-age brother, Ian and his adorkably endearing qualities help humanize her “Never gets no for an answer” business persona, but that only goes so far. Sully, Hal’s friend-food truck partner-roommate, adds playful winks and nods and say no mores to post-Quinn encounters and exploring the reasons for Hal’s refusal to accept the banker’s proposition. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is…right?

What I love and what is immediately apparent from the first page is the genuine dialogue, character chemistry, and strong (though wordless presence) of the story’s other main character, Food. One of my favorite quandaries is having a pocketful of cash and tons of food options pumping their amazing aromas in my face. I’m also the kind of person who would starve to death because making a choice on what I’ll eat is really hard when I’m torn in a million different directions. Yet, Hal makes a food lover’s choice easy. At her food truck, Cheesy Does It, you can stuff your face with any number of savory sandwiches. From “Heard of Buffalo!” to “Sloppy Firsts” to “Hippy Dippy” and more, everyone from investment bankers to Instagrammers to blue collar workers can find something to enjoy. Hal is more concerned with making sure no one leaves her truck hungry than with her bottom line.

As Hal and Quinn spend more time together (for better or worse), boundaries between business and personal blur. Can they create a recipe for success or will it all fall apart?

***Awesome bonus: If you want to learn how to make some of the sandwiches in Perfect Pairing, author Rachel Spangler shows you how in a series of videos on her website.***
